In case you thought you need a well-sorted, super-clean car to go racing, here's one that proves otherwise. It's Datsun 240Z owner Shawn Bassett bought off Craigslist for $1100 that started out as a ratty, Bondo-covered basket case and slowly evolved into the time-attack beast you see here.
Bassett visited the Hoonigan headquarters recently to show off his sweet build. Because he used to own a carbon fiber composite production company, Bassett decided to re-body the car himself with custom panels. The only original body parts are the bulkhead and the metal the doors bolt to.
Under the hood sits a 5.3-liter Chevy V-8 out of a Silverado, making 370 horsepower to the wheels. That doesn't sound like a lot compared to some other builds, but this car was made to be reliable, after all. And it has just 2500 pounds to move around, so it's not like it's slow.
Bassett currently races in Global Time Attack, and plans to go compete at Pikes Peak in 2019. We can't wait to see it go up the hill at speed.
